The increase in the of online social media networks has increased the frequency of cyberbullying incidents. Cyberbullying is referred to as the aggressive, continuous and intentional use of abusive language and display of hateful behaviour with the intention to harm the individual and his reputation online. The instances of suicides and cases of mental illnesses especially among the youth are on a rise. There are numerous ways in which cyberbullying can affect a person's life including effecting him mentally and physically. However, the detection techniques for effective cyberbullying detection are limited. The use of techniques like machine Learning, Deep Learning and Generative AI have come to the rescue. Hence, this study discusses the definition, evolution and types of Generative AI. It further discusses the types of cyberbullying. This paper also brings forward the detection techniques for efficient cyberbullying detection which includes both conventional and generative AI based techniques like large language model-based solutions. This paper further explores the future research directions in cyberbullying detection. Hence, this study paves way for efficient detection of cyberbullying thereby leveraging technological solutions for a safer online environment.
